What was the name of this project and why?
We named this project The Classic Daylight Ranch Home Staging because the name practically chose itself.
Built in 1960, the home still features many of the details that make this style of home so appealing today. Original cabinetry, thoughtful built-ins, and distinctive architectural features give the home a strong sense of personality from the moment you walk through the door.
This wasn’t a house that needed a dramatic transformation. It already had plenty of character. Our job was simply to help buyers notice the details that made it special.
What neighborhood was this home in?
Located on a quiet, tree-lined cul-de-sac in Portland’s Russell neighborhood, this home sits in a part of the city that feels established and welcoming.
Nearby parks, mature trees, and a strong sense of community give the area a comfortable, lived-in feel, while the Alberta Arts District is just a short drive away for coffee, dinner, or an afternoon of exploring local shops.
It’s easy to see why this location continues to appeal to buyers who want a quieter residential setting without feeling disconnected from the city.
What was the demographic of the targeted buyer?
With four bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths, we felt this home would appeal to buyers looking for both space and flexibility.
The layout offered a variety of ways to use the space, with multiple gathering areas, built-ins throughout the home, and room for both everyday living and entertaining. Unlike many homes from this era, the floor plan still feels remarkably functional today.
Whether buyers are drawn to the views, the entertaining spaces, or the home’s original character, there is something here for everyone to appreciate.
Who was the client?
This project was especially meaningful for our team. The homeowner’s daughter is a close friend of our staging manager, which meant we had the opportunity to help prepare a home that had been loved and cared for over many years.
The property was listed by Breylan Deal-Eriksen and Zack Ostrom of Deal & Company. Their team understands the value of thoughtful presentation, making professional staging a natural part of their marketing strategy.
Together, our goal was simple: showcase the home’s character while helping buyers envision how they might live in the space today.
What challenges did you overcome?
One of the biggest challenges was knowing when to stop. Homes with this much personality can easily become overwhelmed by staging. We wanted every design decision to support the home’s original character rather than compete with it.
In the living room, we selected pieces with clean lines and a light, neutral palette that complemented the architecture while keeping the space bright and inviting. Contemporary artwork added visual interest without drawing attention away from the home’s most important features.
We were especially mindful of what awaited beyond the windows. Sweeping vistas of the Columbia River and Mt. St. Helens are impossible to ignore, and we wanted buyers’ attention to naturally gravitate toward them. By keeping the furnishings simple and intentional, the landscape became part of the experience of the home itself.
What features were you focused on showcasing?
Once we stepped back and let the home speak for itself, several features naturally emerged as focal points. One of our favorites was the striking double-sided fireplace and adjoining built-in bookcase. These original elements create a natural gathering place between the living and dining areas and immediately draw your attention.
We styled the shelving with a curated mix of books, accessories, and natural textures that enhanced the space without distracting from the craftsmanship. Nearby, we created a small seating area that transformed an overlooked corner into a cozy place to enjoy a cup of coffee, relax by the fire, or linger after dinner.
Throughout the home, we looked for opportunities to highlight the thoughtful details that made everyday life easier. The built-in desk became a functional workspace styled with books and office accessories, helping buyers envision everything from homework sessions to working from home.
In the primary suite, a built-in vanity with its own sink offered another charming reminder of the home’s original design.
But perhaps the most memorable space in the home was the classic rumpus room.
Complete with warm wood paneling, a built-in bar, and a second fireplace, the room captured the playful spirit of mid-century entertaining. It was easy to imagine game nights, celebrations, and evenings spent relaxing with friends.
Rather than trying to modernize the room beyond recognition, we embraced what made it unique. A green mid-century-inspired sofa, colorful abstract artwork, and carefully selected accessories brought fresh energy to the space while complementing the rich wood tones already present.
The built-in bar deserved special attention as well. Styled with retro-inspired glassware and entertaining pieces, it helped buyers envision the room as more than a finished basement. It became a destination within the home—a place to gather, relax, and enjoy.
The Results
Buyers responded quickly to what made this daylight ranch so distinctive. Within just a few days on the market, the property received six offers.
While staging certainly played a role, the home’s success was rooted in something that can’t be manufactured: authentic character. From the original built-ins and architectural details to the incredible views and unforgettable rumpus room, this was a home that stood out from everything else on the market.
Our role was simply to help those features shine.
We were honored to be part of the process.
